Garden Lighting
Atmospheric LED garden lighting that extends your outdoor living into the evening.
About this service
Well-designed garden lighting transforms an outdoor space after dark — highlighting planting, illuminating paths and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. We design and install 12 V and 240 V low-voltage LED systems with weather-rated fittings, working in partnership with qualified electricians for any mains connections. From subtle path lights to dramatic uplighters on specimen trees, we provide a full design and installation service.
Lighting Design
We produce a lighting plan showing fitting positions, cable routes, transformer locations and beam angles — coordinating light layers rather than just adding fixtures.
Path & Step Lighting
Recessed or spike-mounted bollards and step lights ensure safe movement through the garden at night without over-illuminating the space.
Tree & Shrub Uplighting
Directional spike spotlights cast dramatic shadows through canopies and pick out textured bark on specimen trees — one of the most effective garden lighting techniques.
Wall-wash & Feature Lighting
Linear LED strip or discrete wall-mounted fittings wash walls and fences with light, adding depth and making the garden feel larger at night.
Smart Control
Transformer-based systems can include dusk-to-dawn sensors, timers or smart phone-controlled dimming — allowing different moods without touching a switch.
Weatherproof IP65+ Fittings
All outdoor fittings are rated minimum IP65 (dust-tight and jet-spray resistant). We use quality branded fittings — not budget imports — for longevity.
Our process
A clear, professional approach on every project — so you know what to expect at every stage.
Design Consultation
We visit after dusk if possible to assess the garden in the dark — this reveals natural focal points and areas that need careful handling to avoid light pollution.
Lighting Plan
A scale plan showing fitting types, positions and cable runs is produced. We specify the transformer capacity needed and control options.
Cable Installation
Low-voltage cables are buried to a minimum 300 mm depth in conduit. Surface-run cables are clipped neatly and protected with armoured sheathing where exposed.
Fitting Installation
Fittings are positioned and adjusted to achieve the designed angles. Spike fittings are set in a collar of sharp sand for stability and easy future adjustment.
Testing & Handover
The full system is tested, timers and sensors set, and we demonstrate the controls at handover — including how to replace any fitting if needed.
Common questions
Practical answers to the questions we hear most often about garden lighting.
Do I need an electrician for garden lights?
Any 240 V mains connections must be carried out by a Part P registered electrician. 12 V low-voltage systems connected to a transformer are not notifiable and can be installed by a competent landscaper — we handle this in-house.
How much does garden lighting cost to run?
LED garden lighting is very economical — a typical domestic installation of 15–20 fittings running four hours per night costs around £30–50 per year in electricity at current rates.
Can lighting be added to an existing garden?
Yes — we can retrofit lighting into an established garden, burying cables along edges and through beds with minimal disturbance to existing plants and paving.
