Planting & Soft Landscaping

Planting

Expertly chosen plants, trees and shrubs installed to thrive in your soil and climate.

About this service

The right plant in the right place is the foundation of low-maintenance, year-round garden interest. We work with specialist nurseries to source healthy, well-rooted stock and install everything with proper soil preparation, appropriate spacing and the backfill mix that gives each plant the best start. We cover seasonal bedding, mixed borders, hedging, trees and structural shrubs.

Soil Preparation

We break up compaction, improve drainage with grit on clay soils and add organic matter — well-rotted compost or green waste — before planting to give roots room to establish.

Structural Shrubs & Trees

Multi-stem birches, topiary balls, specimen shrubs and standard trees provide year-round structure and focal points that last decades.

Seasonal Bedding

Spring and summer bedding schemes using plug plants or grown-on pots, colour-coordinated to complement permanent planting and your garden's palette.

Hedging Installation

Bare-root hedging in winter (cheaper and quicker to establish) or pot-grown year-round. Common species include Box, Laurel, Hornbeam, Yew and Hawthorn.

Climbers & Wall Shrubs

Wisteria, Clematis, Roses and Hydrangea petiolaris trained on wall-mounted wires or trellis — we install the support framework as part of the planting.

Mulching & Plant Care

A 75 mm bark mulch applied after planting suppresses weeds, retains moisture and insulates roots — reducing establishment watering by up to 50%.

Our process

A clear, professional approach on every project — so you know what to expect at every stage.

1

Planting Design

We produce a planting plan showing species, quantities and positions. Plans account for mature spread so plants have room to grow without crowding.

2

Plant Sourcing

We order from RHS-accredited nurseries and quality wholesale growers, selecting plants at the right size for the project — not the smallest or largest in the range.

3

Soil Preparation

Beds are cleared, weeds removed (including roots), soil broken up and organic matter incorporated. Poor subsoil is replaced where needed.

4

Planting & Staking

Plants are positioned and backfilled with a mix of topsoil and compost, firmed well and watered in. Trees over 1.5 m are staked at a low angle to allow the trunk to flex and strengthen.

5

Mulching & Aftercare Advice

Beds are mulched and we provide a written aftercare guide covering watering for the first season, feeding and any pruning needed in year one.

Common questions

Practical answers to the questions we hear most often about planting.

What is the best time of year to plant?

Autumn (September–November) is ideal for most hardy trees, shrubs and hedging — the soil is still warm but rainfall reduces the need for watering. Container-grown plants can go in at any time if watered well.

How long does it take for new planting to establish?

Most shrubs and hedging are fully established within one to two growing seasons. Trees may take three to five years to begin growing vigorously after transplanting.

Can you plant in clay soil?

Yes — Hampshire has a lot of clay-based soils. We choose appropriate species, improve drainage, plant slightly proud of the surface and mulch heavily. Many excellent shrubs and trees actually prefer clay.
