Hard Landscaping

Decking

Bespoke timber and composite decking that extends your living space outdoors.

About this service

A well-built deck creates a natural transition between house and garden, and can level out sloping sites that are otherwise hard to use. We build decks in pressure-treated softwood, hardwood (such as Ipe and Cumaru) and composite boards, all on a properly engineered frame with appropriate joist sizing and ventilation to prevent rot.

Pressure-Treated Softwood

Kiln-dried, pressure-treated C24 graded timber forms a strong, affordable frame. Decking boards in the same material are grooved for grip and spaced to allow drainage.

Composite Decking

Wood-plastic composite boards are splinter-free, fade-resistant and require only an annual wash — ideal for busy families or those who prefer minimal upkeep.

Hardwood Decking

Ipe, Cumaru and Bangkirai are incredibly durable tropical hardwoods that can last 25+ years with minimal treatment. FSC-certified sources used throughout.

Structural Frame Engineering

We size joists and bearers to the span, use galvanised joist hangers and ensure adequate ventilation beneath the deck to prevent moisture build-up.

Integrated Balustrades

Timber, metal or glass balustrades installed to Building Regulations requirements (1.1 m for decks over 600 mm above ground).

Steps & Lighting

Matching deck steps in the same material, with the option for integrated LED strip lighting beneath treads and within balustrades.

Our process

A clear, professional approach on every project — so you know what to expect at every stage.

1

Design & Specification

We agree the deck size, height, material and any features such as built-in seating or planters. A drawing is produced for your approval before work starts.

2

Ground Preparation

The ground beneath the deck is cleared, levelled and covered with weed-suppressing membrane and gravel to prevent vegetation growth and aid drainage.

3

Foundation Posts

Concrete pad footings or ground screws are installed at each post position. Ground screws are faster to install and avoid the need for wet concrete.

4

Frame & Joists

The structural frame is built level and square, with all timber ends treated. Joist spacing (typically 400 mm centres) is set for the board being used.

5

Boarding, Balustrade & Finishing

Deck boards are fixed with stainless screws or hidden clips, balustrade is installed, and any lighting cables chased in before final inspection.

Common questions

Practical answers to the questions we hear most often about decking.

Does a deck need building regulations approval?

Decks under 300 mm from the ground and not attached to the house as a platform that raises the floor level above the existing ground level generally fall within permitted development. Decks over 300 mm high that are raised and attached may need approval — we advise on this during the design stage.

How long does a composite deck last compared to timber?

Quality composite decking carries warranties of 25 years or more and should outlast untreated softwood significantly. Hardwood decking properly maintained can also last 25+ years.

How do you prevent a deck from becoming slippery?

We use grooved or brushed-surface boards, which significantly improve grip. Anti-slip strips can be added to steps. Pressure washing annually removes algae which is the main cause of slipperiness.
