Fencing & Boundaries

Fencing

Quality fencing supply and installation — secure, attractive and built to last.

About this service

Good fencing provides privacy, security and a backdrop for planting without dominating the garden. We supply and install a wide range of fencing styles — from traditional closeboard and featherboard to contemporary slatted screens and metal railings — using pressure-treated softwood or hardwood as appropriate for the location and budget.

Closeboard & Featherboard

The most popular domestic fence type in Hampshire — overlapping featherboard panels on arris rails with concrete or treated timber posts sunk 600 mm into the ground.

Lap Panel Fencing

Cost-effective for boundary screening. We recommend concrete posts and gravel boards to extend the life of panels that otherwise sit in wet soil.

Contemporary Slatted Screens

Horizontal or vertical timber slats in hardwood or composite material — ideal as a stylish garden room divider or boundary feature.

Hit & Miss Fencing

Alternating boards on both sides of the rail allow airflow while providing full privacy — excellent for exposed sites where solid panels catch the wind.

Concrete & Metal Posts

We use concrete or hot-dip galvanised steel posts for all permanent installations — they outlast timber posts by decades and require no maintenance.

Gates & Access

Matching timber or metal gates with quality fittings and hinges rated for the gate weight — including automated gate options for driveways.

Our process

A clear, professional approach on every project — so you know what to expect at every stage.

1

Boundary Survey

We confirm the line of the boundary, check for any underground services using a cable avoidance tool and agree panel heights and post positions.

2

Old Fence Removal

Existing fencing and posts are removed and taken away. Concrete post stumps are broken out rather than left to decay underground.

3

Post Installation

Posts are set in post-mix concrete at the correct depth and spacing, checked for plumb and allowed to set before panels are fixed.

4

Panel & Rail Fixing

Panels or featherboards are fixed level, with consistent gaps, and gravel boards fitted at the base. All fixings are stainless or galvanised to resist corrosion.

5

Finishing & Treatment

Any cut ends are treated with preservative. Timber can be stained or painted to your chosen colour if required.

Common questions

Practical answers to the questions we hear most often about fencing.

How tall can a garden fence be without planning permission?

Fences up to 2 metres in height require no planning permission. Fences over 1 metre adjacent to a highway (including footpaths) are limited to 1 metre without permission.

How long will a treated softwood fence last?

A pressure-treated softwood fence with concrete posts and gravel boards should last 15–20 years. Untreated or ground-contact softwood may last only 5–7 years.

Who is responsible for a shared boundary fence?

Responsibility is set out in your title deeds — look for a T-mark on the boundary. If there is no clear mark, it is worth agreeing in writing with your neighbour before installation.
