What to Do in Your Garden in February

February 2025·4 min read

February is a transitional month in Hampshire and Dorset gardens — still firmly winter, but with unmistakable signs of spring arriving. Snowdrops, hellebores and winter aconites are in full flower, and on mild days the soil is workable. It is a month that rewards early action.

Pruning and Cutting Back

February is the ideal time to prune many garden shrubs before new growth gets underway. Hard pruning stimulates strong new growth and keeps plants healthy and well-shaped.

  • Prune buddleja hard — cut to within 30cm of the ground
  • Cut back cornus and salix grown for stem colour
  • Summer-flowering clematis (Group 3) can be cut back to 30cm
  • Prune late-flowering shrubs like lavatera and caryopteris
  • Tidy ornamental grasses — cut back before new growth emerges

Lawn Preparation

If the lawn is not waterlogged, February is a good time to aerate compacted areas with a garden fork, apply a moss-killing treatment if needed, and plan any lawn renovation work for early spring.

Early Planting

Garlic can go in now if not already done, along with shallot sets in a sheltered spot. Sow sweet peas in pots in a cold greenhouse or on a cool windowsill. Hardy perennials can be planted on milder days if the ground is workable.
