The Best Perennial Plants for Hampshire Borders

February 2025·5 min read

Herbaceous perennials die back in winter and regrow reliably each spring, building bigger and better clumps year on year. They are the most cost-effective and low-effort way to fill borders with colour, and the range of species suited to Hampshire's soils is enormous. Here are our firm favourites.

Reliable Long-Flowering Perennials

These perennials provide months of colour with minimal effort — no deadheading, staking or fussing required.

  • Geranium 'Rozanne' — violet-blue flowers from June to October
  • Salvia 'Caradonna' — upright purple spikes, long season
  • Knautia macedonica — deep crimson, prolific, long-flowering
  • Achillea 'Moonshine' — yellow, flat heads, excellent for cutting
  • Persicaria amplexicaulis — dependable, long season, good for bees
  • Echinacea purpurea — bold colour, attractive seedheads in winter

Structural Perennials for Drama

Tall structural perennials like Verbena bonariensis, Rudbeckia fulgida and Miscanthus grasses bring height and drama to borders. They work particularly well at the back of borders or in island beds.

Perennials for Shade

Astrantia, astilbe, digitalis and hostas all thrive in partial shade and are well-suited to the shadier borders found in many Hampshire gardens, particularly under mature trees or along north-facing boundaries.
