When creating a new lawn, the choice between turfing and seeding is one of the first decisions to make. Both can produce excellent results — but they suit different situations, timescales and budgets. Here is a clear comparison to help you decide.
Turfing: Instant Results
Cultivated turf gives you an established-looking lawn within days of laying. It is the right choice where you want results quickly, where the garden is being used by children or dogs soon after completion, or where the project budget allows.
- Usable (lightly) within 3–4 weeks of laying
- Can be laid spring, summer or autumn
- More expensive than seeding — typically 3–4x the cost
- Requires careful watering in first 4–6 weeks
- Best laid on thoroughly prepared, level ground
Seeding: Cost-Effective with More Choice
Lawn seed is significantly cheaper than turf and allows you to choose a specific seed mix — fine ornamental grass, hard-wearing family lawn, shade-tolerant or drought-resistant. The trade-off is time: a seeded lawn takes 8–12 weeks to be usable.
Our Recommendation
For most domestic garden projects in Hampshire, we recommend cultivated turf — the professional quality, speed and reliability outweigh the extra cost. For larger areas where budget is a significant factor, seeding in early autumn (September) gives excellent results.
A&T Landscapes lays turf and prepares ground for seeding across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire. Call 07735 916029 for a new lawn quote.
