Project Spotlight: Cottage Garden in Lyndhurst

June 2022·4 min read

Lyndhurst sits at the heart of the New Forest and its properties have a distinctive character that calls for sympathetic garden design. This cottage garden project was one of our most enjoyable of the year — combining traditional planting with a well-considered structure that will improve for decades.

The Brief

The owners wanted a traditional cottage garden with year-round structure, fragrant planting and a sense of abundance. The front garden needed to complement the property's character from the road. No lawn was wanted — the entire space was to be planted.

  • Box-edged gravel path from gate to front door
  • Rose-covered arch over the gate
  • Deep mixed borders either side of the path
  • Fragrant planting — roses, lavender, sweet peas, jasmine
  • Spring bulbs underplanted throughout

The Planting Scheme

We designed a planting scheme that layered spring bulbs beneath a permanent framework of roses, salvias, geraniums, lavender and nepeta. The result provides colour from February (snowdrops and hellebores) through to October (late-flowering asters and sedum).

The Result

The finished garden looked established from the first season — the combination of immediate impact from large pot-grown plants and the rapid establishment of hardy perennials gave a full, generous appearance within weeks of completion.
