This project on the edge of the New Forest presented a wonderful design opportunity — a large, mature plot with excellent trees and an attractive property, but a garden layout that had not changed in 25 years and badly needed updating. The brief was to modernise while retaining the woodland character of the setting.
The Brief
The clients wanted a generous entertaining terrace, a simplified lawn area, improved boundary screening and a planting scheme that complemented the surrounding woodland. Budget was £22,000.
- New natural sandstone terrace — 45m²
- Simplified lawn with steel edging and crisp lines
- Native mixed hedging on the rear boundary
- Woodland-edge planting with ferns, hostas and astilbes
- Concealed low-voltage lighting in key positions
The Build
The project took 10 working days. The existing concrete patio was broken out and removed, new drainage installed beneath the terrace area, and the sandstone laid on a mortar bed over a fully compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Planting was completed on the final two days.
The Result
The finished garden felt transformed — a modern, usable space that sat comfortably within its woodland setting. The natural stone choice was particularly successful in connecting the hard landscaping to the surrounding landscape.
