New-build homes in Eastleigh and across Hampshire are typically handed over to buyers with compacted subsoil and rubble where the garden should be. Creating a proper garden from scratch requires thorough soil preparation, careful levelling and the right planting choices for the exposed, often difficult conditions new-build plots present.
Starting from Scratch
The rear garden of this Eastleigh new-build was 8m x 6m — a typical size for a modern town house plot. The ground was compacted subsoil with builder's rubble throughout the top 20cm. Our first task was thorough soil preparation before any lawn or planting could begin.
- Topsoil strip and rubble removal
- Import of 150mm screened topsoil throughout
- Rotovation and levelling
- Pre-turfing fertiliser applied and raked in
- Premium cultivated turf laid — 48m²
- Raised timber-edged planting beds along two boundaries
The Planting Scheme
We designed a simple but effective planting scheme for the two boundary borders — evergreen structural shrubs at the back, including photinia and pittosporum, with a mix of perennials and grasses in front for colour and movement.
A Garden Ready to Grow
The project was completed in three days. Six months later, the lawn was established and the planting had settled in well — the new owners had a proper, usable garden in their first summer.
