Vertical planting is one of the most underused tools in garden design. Climbing plants soften hard structures, add fragrance, provide privacy and attract wildlife — all without using valuable ground space. Choosing the right climber for each structure and aspect makes all the difference to success.
Best Climbers for Sunny Walls and Fences
A sunny south or west-facing wall is a premium growing position — use it well with these striking climbing plants.
- Rosa — climbing roses in sun produce the best flowers and scent
- Wisteria — spectacular in May, needs strong support and annual pruning
- Clematis 'Jackmanii' — reliable purple, June to September
- Solanum crispum — potato vine, long flowering, semi-evergreen
- Trachelospermum jasminoides — evergreen, intensely fragrant
- Campsis radicans — trumpet vine, exotic orange flowers
Climbers for Shade and North-Facing Walls
Hydrangea anomala petiolaris (climbing hydrangea) is the outstanding choice for a shaded north-facing wall. Hedera (ivy) provides year-round coverage and is superb for wildlife. Parthenocissus gives spectacular autumn colour.
Supporting Your Climbers
Most climbers need support fixed to the wall or fence — horizontal wires spaced 40–45cm apart are the most versatile. Tie in new growth regularly in the growing season and prune to maintain shape and flowering.
