Patios & Paving

Expertly laid patios, paths and driveways in natural stone, porcelain and block paving.

About this service

A patio is the most-used part of any garden, so the quality of the base and the laying are just as important as the material you choose. We install all types of paving — from budget-friendly concrete flags to premium Indian sandstone, porcelain and granite setts — with a properly compacted sub-base and full mortar bed as standard.

Full Sub-base Preparation

We excavate to 200–300 mm, compact a Type 1 MOT granular sub-base and lay a full mortar bed — not spot-bedding — for a stable, frost-resistant result.

Natural Stone

Indian sandstone, Yorkstone and slate are popular choices with Hampshire homeowners. We select consistent calibrated slabs and seal on completion.

Porcelain Paving

Large-format porcelain tiles (600×600 to 900×600 mm) offer low maintenance and a contemporary look. Require a stronger mortar mix and specialist adhesive.

Block Paving

Concrete or clay block paving is ideal for driveways and paths — permeable options available to meet SuDS drainage requirements.

Pointing & Jointing

We use polymeric jointing compound that resists ants and weed growth, or traditional mortar pointing on sandstone for a period look.

Steps & Edging

Matching stone steps, bull-nosed edging and soldier courses complete the look and provide clean transitions between levels.

Our process

A clear, professional approach on every project — so you know what to expect at every stage.

1

Survey & Material Selection

We measure the area, discuss drainage requirements, advise on material options and provide samples where possible so you can see the stone in your own garden light.

2

Excavation & Sub-base

Existing material is removed and the ground excavated to the correct depth. A compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base is installed and checked for level and falls.

3

Laying

Stone or paving is laid on a full mortar bed with consistent joint widths. Cuts are made with a diamond wet saw for clean, accurate edges.

4

Jointing & Sealing

Joints are filled with polymeric sand or mortar. Natural stone is sealed with a penetrating impregnator to protect against staining.

5

Clearance & Sign-off

All spoil is removed from site, the area is cleaned down and we inspect the finished patio with you before signing off.

Common questions

Practical answers to the questions we hear most often about patios & paving.

How long will a new patio take to install?

Most domestic patios (up to 40 m²) take two to four days. Larger areas or complex patterns with cuts take longer — we provide a programme before starting.

Do I need planning permission for a patio?

Generally no for rear gardens. Front garden paving over 5 m² requires the use of permeable materials or provision for drainage to avoid planning permission in most cases.

What is the difference between spot-bedding and full mortar bed?

Spot-bedding uses five blobs of mortar per slab and is a short-cut that leads to cracking and movement. We always use a continuous full mortar bed for a solid, long-lasting result.

Which paving is best for a low-maintenance garden?

Porcelain is the lowest maintenance — it is non-porous, highly resistant to staining and needs only occasional cleaning with a pressure washer. Natural sandstone requires annual sealing.
