Patio Maintenance Tips for Long-Lasting Results

November 2023·4 min read

A quality patio is a significant investment that should last 20–30 years with proper care. The maintenance routine required varies significantly by material — what is right for natural sandstone can damage porcelain, and vice versa. Here is the correct approach for each.

Porcelain Paving Maintenance

Porcelain is the lowest-maintenance paving material available. It does not require sealing and resists staining effectively. An annual pressure wash is usually sufficient to keep it looking excellent.

  • Annual pressure wash to remove algae and dirt
  • Use a porcelain-safe cleaner for stubborn stains
  • Never use acid cleaners — they damage the surface
  • Check joints annually and re-point any loose areas

Natural Stone Maintenance

Natural sandstone, limestone and granite all benefit from sealing every two to three years. Sealing reduces staining and makes regular cleaning much easier. Use a penetrating impregnator rather than a surface seal, which can look plastic and peel.

Preventing Weeds in Joints

Weeds in paving joints are the most common maintenance complaint. Using a polymeric jointing compound rather than standard sand prevents weed germination in joints and resists wash-out in heavy rain. Re-point with polymeric compound when joints become empty.

A&T Landscapes uses quality polymeric jointing and recommends sealing on all natural stone patios across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire. Call 07735 916029.
