Garden drainage problems are among the most common and frustrating issues we address across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire. The right drainage solution depends on the scale of the problem, the soil type, the available outfall and the budget. This guide covers all the main options clearly.
French Drains
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench containing a perforated pipe that collects and redirects surface and near-surface water. It is the most versatile and commonly used drainage solution in garden settings.
- Ideal for intercepting water at the base of slopes
- Excellent for relieving waterlogged lawn areas
- Can discharge to a soakaway or existing drainage system
- Typical cost in Hampshire: £800–£2,500 depending on length
- Maintenance: annual check to ensure outfall is clear
- Can be installed with minimal disruption to existing garden
Soakaways
A soakaway is a pit filled with coarse rubble or plastic crates into which water is directed. The water disperses naturally into the surrounding subsoil. Soakaways are very effective where the subsoil has reasonable infiltration, but they will not work in areas with impermeable chalk or a very high water table.
Piped Drainage Systems
For larger gardens or severe waterlogging, a system of land drains — rigid or flexible perforated pipes laid in a herringbone or grid pattern — collects water across the garden and directs it to a central outlet. This is the most comprehensive solution and the most disruptive to install.
