Choosing the Right Paving for Your Patio

October 2024·5 min read

The paving material you choose for your patio affects not just the look but the maintenance requirements, longevity and cost of the finished result. With so many options available, making the right choice requires understanding the real differences between them — not just what looks good in a showroom.

Porcelain Paving

Porcelain has become the most popular patio material in Hampshire over the past five years. It is extremely hard-wearing, frost-proof, very low-maintenance and available in a huge range of colours and formats. The large-format tiles (90x90cm or 60x90cm) give a particularly contemporary look.

  • Lifespan: 30+ years with minimal maintenance
  • Maintenance: occasional jet wash, no sealing required
  • Cost: £60–£120 per m² installed in Hampshire
  • Best for: contemporary gardens, low-maintenance requirements

Natural Sandstone

Natural sandstone has warmth and character that porcelain cannot replicate. Indian sandstone is the most common and affordable option; York sandstone has a more distinctly English character and suits period properties particularly well. Both require sealing to prevent staining.

Limestone and Granite

Limestone gives a pale, elegant finish that suits formal garden designs. Granite is exceptionally durable and available in a wide range of colours including the popular grey tones. Both are premium materials at the higher end of the cost range.
